Pakistan in dire need of humanitarian aid

We need to help those affected by the climate change disaster in Pakistan. 33 million people suffered severe flooding due to heavy rains. More than 1,000 people were killed, a million houses were destroyed and roads and bridges lost. They need emergency food aid, especially young children who are vulnerable to fatal malnutrition.

"The situation is getting worse," said Khuram Gondal, director of Save Children Pakistan. It continues to rain in the flooded area. Hundreds of thousands of families became homeless, many of whom had little to begin with and now have none. Many of those who had previously fled to the highlands were now forced to leave further.

Humanitarian aid from the international community is very important. Increasing foreign aid by donating to charities doing relief missions in Pakistan and writing letters to elected officials can help. The World Food Programme, which is under pressure to feed many countries already facing famine, urgently needs funds to help Pakistan. Save the Children, UNICEF, Mercy Corps, Catholic Relief Services, CARE and other charities need support to save lives. William Lambers, author of Ending World Hunger

thanks for the work
To me, Labor Day isn't just a holiday, it's a day to celebrate the hard work, dedication and ingenuity of the American workforce. Labor Day first became a federal holiday in 1894. Hardworking citizens, representatives of various trade unions constantly raise the standard of living in the country and improve the lives of all generations. Our cities, states and countries are better and more efficient because they work hard. As I approach the end of my twenty-fourth and final year as Illinois Secretary of State, I am very grateful to the great unions in our state for their continued support during my tenure. I have always believed in hard work and appreciate it. I want members of the labor movement to know that they can count on me even after I retire. I will continue to support your efforts to ensure that your employees receive good fair wages and safe working conditions and that everyone is treated equally. We are here together.

Thank you for all you do to make Illinois and America great. Jesse White, Secretary of State of Illinois

North and South
In the past, Southern Illinois politicians and citizens proposed dividing Illinois into Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois. I'm fine. North Korea keeps what it earns and South Korea does the same. Now let's see how the South stacks up for Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois.

Cooper's recovery fight
It is heartbreaking to continue to read about the injuries and pain of 8-year-old Cooper Roberts, who was shot by a man with a gun he had legally purchased while watching the Highland Park 4th of July parade with his family . With tens of thousands of gun deaths and serious injuries each year, Cooper's grueling ordeal puts all ardent supporters of Second Amendment gun rights to shame.

Bad Arguments for Student Loan Forgiveness
The Republican attack on the student loan forgiveness donated by President Joe Biden to wealthy Harvard graduates is disingenuous and disingenuous at best. Does the GOP live in another universe? Who would get a useless student loan from a healthy student from a rich family? And what rich parent would let their kids take out unnecessary student loans?

In fact, these loans have been a lifesaver for students from financially disadvantaged families. A disproportionately large percentage of beneficiaries are black and Hispanic. This is because such furniture tends to have fewer resources.

On the other hand, the GOP's opposition to loan forgiveness reflects their philosophy. It attacks everything that provides opportunities for upward mobility and full participation in the American dream for Hispanics and blacks, as well as children from poor families. Dan Lauber, River Forest

Humane treatment of migrants
Mayor Lori Lightfoot hit out at Texas Governor Greg Abbott about busing immigrants to Chicago as part of his nefarious plan. New York and Washington had similar experiences.

Abbott's intolerance is evident in his outrage and outrage against immigrants from Mexico, Central America and Haiti, fueled by the hateful reporting of Fox News. What Abbott doesn't say is an important fact. He made the political calculation that many of these immigrants would not support the GOP even if they were granted citizenship and allowed to vote. He may be right about that, but why would he support a party he treats like rags? Abbott and his colleagues couldn't care less if these immigrants are from Canada or Europe, white and blonde.

My tribute to Lightfoot and New York Mayor Eric Adams for standing on this narrow podium on his behalf.
